FAQs

What stores are offering the rebates?

Participating retailers in Whitehorse include Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, and Inspired Interiors. In rural Yukon they include the Dawson City Home Hardware, the Watson Lake Home Hardware, John Farynowski in Haines Junction, and Tatchun Centre in Carmacks.

I purchased my bulbs outside the Yukon or online and they are from your qualifying list. Can I send those in for a rebate?

Only bulbs purchased in the Yukon qualify for rebates. The utilities have worked with local retailers, who have invested time, money and effort to ensure a supply of qualified products is available for customers.

Why is there a limit on the number of bulbs I can get a rebate on?

There are a limited number of rebates available due to the Yukon Utilities Board approved budgets, so a limit needed to be established per account. The rebates will be offered through December 31, 2017 or until rebates budget is reached.

Why can't I rebate a CFL bulb? Don’t they save the same amount of electricity?

Yes, CFL light bulbs do save about the same amount of electricity as an LED over the course of a year. However, there are a few issues with CFLs. First, they don’t last as long as an LED light bulb; on average a CFL last about 7–10 years, LEDs last up to 25 years. Second, CFLs have a small amount of mercury in them, which requires special clean up when broken. Third, many people do not like the light quality of the CFL. For these reasons, along with the fact that LEDs are becoming more and more available in the marketplace, the utilities chose to rebate the LED light bulbs.

Why is this rebate only for people who pay electricity bills?

The Yukon Utilities Board has directed the utilities to start electricity conservation programs in the residential sector. All residential rate payers contribute to the funding of the inCharge program, so in order to ensure that residential customers benefit from this program, we are using electrical accounts as verification.

Why is this rebate only for residential customers?

The Yukon Utilities Board directed the utilities to start with programs aimed at their residential customers and prove savings before expanding to other customer classes. We hope in future years to be able to expand to other electricity customers in the territory. That being said, we are happy to talk with any Yukoners about ways they can save electricity and money. Although there are no formal programs for small business (general service), government or industrial customers, information and advice about electricity conservation can be obtained by contacting your specific utility.

Why can’t contractors who build houses take advantage of this rebate?

At this time, the rebates must be limited to residential customers as per the Yukon Utilities Board directive. We hope to be able to offer rebates to contractors in the future, and we are happy to work with them now to suggest ways of making new builds or renovations energy efficient.

Why do LEDs need to be ENERGY STAR®?

To ensure the products that qualify for rebates are of a high quality, the ENERGY STAR® standard was utilized. ENERGY STAR® products are widely available and generally are suitable for most residential applications.

How do I receive my rebate?

Fill out a rebate form for the lights and/or for the block heater timer and submit the form online, along with a scanned or photographed copy of your receipt. OR pick up a rebate form at participating retail stores, or print a form above. Either leave the completed form and a copy of your receipt at the store, or drop them off at ATCO Electric Yukon's or Yukon Energy's offices. You'll see your rebate reflected on your electricity bill within approximately one month.

How did inCharge come to be created?

The Yukon’s two electrical utilities have come together to create the inCharge program, which is a territory-wide initiative aimed at helping Yukoners save electricity. This program was created after substantial input from Yukoners and with direction from the utilities’ regulator, the Yukon Utilities Board.

Who do I contact if there is a problem with the product?

You can contact the retailer where the product was purchased, or the manufacturer of the product directly through their website. Return policies vary by retailer and manufacturer.
